Setting Up Email Accounts in Outlook Express

  1. Open Outlook Express and you will find in the top left hand corner of the window a button called Tools. Click on Tools, and near the bottom of the menu that opens, you will find a line that reads "Accounts". Click on Accounts and a new smaller window called "Internet Accounts" will open up. You can tell what a window is called by looking at the blue bar at the top of the window.

  2. Before creating a new account, click on the "Mail" tab at the top of the new window. Every line of writing on this page is an email account. If you do not have any email accounts, then best if you remove them.

To remove an account, click on a line of writing and it will turn blue. If you double click a line, it will open a new window. Just click cancel if this happens. Once a line is blue, click on the remove button on the right hand side and you should see the line disappear. Remove all lines that do not belong here.

To create your new email account, click on the "add" button and on the new menu that pops out the side, click on Mail.

  3. When you click on the mail line in the menu, a new window called the "Internet Connection Wizard" will open.

The first thing that the wizard will ask you for is your display name, eg a full name, a family name, a nickname or a business name etc. When you have made a decision and entered it, click on the next button at the bottom of the page.

  4. The next page on the wizard is going to ask you for your email address.

Enter the full address as given to you. When you have entered your email address, click on next at the bottom of the page.

The next page of the wizard will be about mail servers.

    Enter the following information:

    My incoming mail server: POP3

Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: mail.your-domain (eg mail.turtledesign.com)

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: type in the same SMTP details as for your main account provided by your ISP (eg smtp.your-ISP.com).

Make sure you double check what you have entered to ensure it is correct.

When all the fields on this page have been filled out, click next at the bottom of the page.

  5. The next page on the wizard should be asking for your account name and password.

If you entered your email address correctly a few steps ago, your account name should already be entered for you. It is necessary then to only enter your password. Enter the password supplied to you by Turtle Design. Check that if there are any capital letters in your password they are entered correctly.

You will see right below the password a place where you can put a checkmark beside "remember password". If you check this box, this will make it so you do not have to enter a password to check your email. The thing to be aware of with this is that nobody else needs to type a password to check your email either. Therefore if you are sharing your computer with other people and you do not want them to see your mail, do not check this option. When you are done, click on next at the bottom of the page.

  6. The Congratulations window will appear and you should proceed to click on the "finish" button to complete the account setup.

You should now be able to use your new email account to send and receive emails. If you receive errors, please visit the Outlook Express Support Center. If you still have problems after visiting the Support Center, please feel free to contact us.
